From the airport to the lagoon

Aveiro sits about 88 kilometres from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. Via the A28, joining the A29 and then the A25, the drive usually takes 65 minutes.

It is motorway almost the whole way, and it has the advantage of skirting Porto entirely: the route runs down the coast without touching the VCI ring road. Even at peak times, the journey varies little.

Where your driver will be

In the arrivals hall, past customs, holding a sign with your name. We track the flight number you give us when booking, so a delay asks nothing of you: the pickup shifts on its own.

Airport transfers include one hour of free waiting time from the scheduled pickup.

The centre is walkable, and that matters

Aveiro is flat and small. Once you are dropped at your door, you may well need no further transport during your stay: the canals, the market, the station and the restaurant quarter are all within ten minutes of each other on foot.

It is worth knowing the other way round too. If you are staying at Costa Nova or Barra, across the lagoon, that no longer holds — it is a 10 to 15 minute drive, and there is only one crossing.

What there is to see

The canals are what brings everyone, and the moliceiros — the painted boats with their raised prows — stopped carrying seaweed and started carrying visitors. The trip lasts about 45 minutes.

All within a few minutes on foot:

  • the Central Canal and the Art Nouveau facades along it;
  • the Museum of Aveiro, in the former Convent of Jesus, with the tomb of Saint Joan;
  • the old railway station, tiled from top to bottom, a monument in its own right;
  • Costa Nova, a 15 minute drive away, with its striped fishermen's houses.

And the ovos moles, which have held a Protected Geographical Indication since 2006 — not folklore, a European mark.

Is it worth it against the train?

Here the honest answer is "sometimes", and there is no point pretending otherwise.

The train to Aveiro is good. An Intercidades covers Campanhã–Aveiro in about 40 minutes, several times a day. If you travel light and have nowhere to be, it is a legitimate choice.

What the transfer solves is everything around it. From the airport to Campanhã is about 35 minutes by metro, plus the wait for the train, plus getting from Aveiro station to your accommodation. With luggage the total easily passes two and a half hours — and none of those steps is effortless with large cases.

For anyone arriving with family, with luggage, outside normal hours or to a fixed appointment, the arithmetic reverses.

Price and cancellation

The price is fixed at booking and does not change with traffic or waiting time.

Perguntas frequentes

How long does it take from the airport to Aveiro?+

About 65 minutes via the A28, A29 and A25 in normal conditions. It is motorway almost the whole way, avoiding the congestion that affects journeys into Porto itself.

Is it worth it compared to the train?+

It depends on how you travel, and it is worth being straight about it: the train to Aveiro is good. An Intercidades covers Campanhã–Aveiro in about 40 minutes. The train is not the problem — everything around it is. From the airport you first take the metro to Campanhã, wait for the train, then get from Aveiro station to your accommodation. With luggage, the total easily passes two and a half hours. The transfer does it in one go, at a time you choose.

Will you take me to Costa Nova or Praia da Barra?+

Yes. They are 10 to 15 minutes from central Aveiro, across the lagoon. Give the exact address when booking and the price is calculated for that destination.

What if my flight is delayed?+

You need do nothing. We track the flight number given at booking and the pickup adjusts to your actual arrival. One hour of free waiting is included from the scheduled time.

Do you also drive from Aveiro to the airport?+

Yes, in both directions. For early morning flights we suggest leaving with margin: the A29 near Espinho and the approach to Porto build up from about half past seven.
