From the airport to Braga
Braga sits about 61 kilometres from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. Via the A3 the drive usually takes 45 minutes, almost entirely on motorway.
It is one of the most predictable routes we run from the airport. The exceptions are Monday mornings and Friday evenings, when the A3 builds up between Braga and Porto — allow an hour at those times.
Where your driver will be
In the arrivals hall, past customs, holding a sign with your name. We track the flight number you give us when booking, so a delay asks nothing of you: the pickup shifts on its own.
Airport transfers include one hour of free waiting time from the scheduled pickup.
Bom Jesus is not in the city
Worth knowing before you book: the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, which is what brings most visitors to Braga, sits about 6 kilometres from the centre, on the slope of Mount Espinho.
It is not a walk, and certainly not with luggage. There is the Bom Jesus funicular, running since 1882 — the oldest water-counterweight funicular in the world — but you have to get there first. If that is your destination, say so when booking and we take you to the door.
The same goes for the Sameiro Sanctuary, higher still.
What there is to see
Braga is the oldest city in Portugal to have kept its name: it began as Bracara Augusta, founded by Augustus in the first century BC. Its cathedral is the oldest in the country, older than Portuguese nationhood itself.
All within a few minutes of each other in the centre:
- Braga Cathedral and its treasury museum;
- the Santa Bárbara Garden, against the walls of the old Episcopal Palace;
- Avenida Central and the Theatro Circo;
- Bom Jesus do Monte, 6 kilometres away, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
Is it worth it against the train?
For anyone arriving by air, usually yes.
There is a train to Braga and it is a good one, but it leaves from Porto — Campanhã station — and takes about an hour. From the airport you first have to take the metro into the city and then change to the train: with luggage and waiting, the total approaches two and a half hours.
The transfer covers it in 45 minutes, direct, from the terminal to the door. And if your destination is Bom Jesus or Sameiro, the gap widens: by train you would still be 6 uphill kilometres from where you want to be.

The price is fixed at booking and does not change with traffic or waiting time.
