For many pilgrims, Tui is where the Portuguese Camino de Santiago begins: the first town in Spain, about 115 kilometres from Santiago Cathedral. From Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport it is about 120 kilometres, roughly an hour and a quarter by road.
Why the Camino so often starts in Tui
To receive the Compostela you must walk at least the last 100 kilometres to Santiago. From Tui it is about 115 — five or six stages — which is why Tui is the most popular starting point of the Portuguese Camino. It is also the first Spanish town on the Camino, with the fortress-cathedral of Santa María crowning the old town.
Tui and Valença
Tui and Valença face each other across the river Minho, joined by the international bridge. Some pilgrims start at Valença fortress and walk across the bridge on day one. Both have their own fixed-price routes.
From the airport to the Camino, and back
Your driver meets your flight with your name and takes you straight to your hostel or hotel in Tui — backpack, poles and all. For a group the price is per vehicle, not per person: a van for six pilgrims costs much less each than you might think.
And at the end, in Santiago, there is a route back to Porto Airport at the same price.
